When do schoolchildren have holidays in Bavaria?

During the school year, schoolchildren in Bavaria have five holiday periods. Their dates are determined by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture and published on its official website. There is also a 6-week break between two years. It is approved by the Conference of the Ministers of Education of the German States. Here are the school holidays in Bavaria:

Summer holidays.
Days off from school for All Saints’ Day (autumn break).

Spring break (winter break).
Easter holidays.
Pentecost holidays.

In Bavaria, the names of the holiday periods are somewhat different from those of the other German states. Instead of winter holidays, Bavaria officially uses the name “spring holidays”. The autumn holidays in Bavaria are officially called “All Saints’ Days off from school”.

IMPORTANT! In Bavaria, school holidays usually start on Monday and end on Friday. Be sure to take this into account! If your school has a school day on Saturday, check when classes start after the school holidays.

In addition, Bavarian schools are closed on all public holidays. There are only 14 of them throughout the year, but Assumption Day always falls during the summer holidays. The Day of Repentance and Prayer is especially worth noting. On this day, schools are open, teachers are at work, but children have no classes.

IMPORTANT! Public and private home schools may request an additional six days of school holidays. The Ministry’s responsible representative for secondary schools, lyceums, vocational lyceums and technical colleges will make the request.
