When do schoolchildren in Bavaria have their holidays?

During the school year, students in Bavaria have five break periods. The Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture determines and publishes their dates, and the schedule is set years in advance. There is also a six-week break between two school years. This break is approved by the Conference of Education Ministers, depending on the requirements of the federal states. Here are the different school breaks in Bavaria:

In Bavaria, the names of the school holidays differ slightly from those in other German states. Instead of winter break, Bavaria officially calls it “spring break.” The autumn break in Bavaria is officially called “All Saints’ Days Off from School.”

IMPORTANT! In Bavaria, school holidays usually begin on Monday and end on Friday. Be sure to take this into account! If your school has a school day on Saturday, check when classes start after the school holidays.

Furthermore, Bavarian schools are closed on all public holidays. There are only 14 of them throughout the year, but Assumption Day always falls during the summer holidays. The Day of Repentance and Prayer is especially noteworthy. On this day, schools are open and teachers are at work, but children have no classes.

IMPORTANT! Public and private home schools may request an additional six days of school vacation. Approval for this is granted by the Ministry’s responsible representative for secondary schools, lyceums, vocational lyceums, and technical colleges. Boarding schools and vocational schools may adjust their school schedule. If you or your child attends such an institution, please confirm when their school vacation will be.
