Useful Information for Parents and Pupils!
Specific features of the school calendar in Bavaria
During each academic year, Bavarian pupils have five main rest periods, as well as a 6-week break between academic years. In total, there are 14 statutory public holidays a year in this state, but the feast of the Assumption of Mary always falls within the summer holiday period.
Please note the official names of the rest periods, which differ from other regions of Germany:
- Instead of traditional winter holidays, the name “spring holidays” is officially established at state level in Bavaria.
- The classic autumn holidays are officially referred to as “Days free from school for All Saints’ Day”.
Important school attendance rules
- Beginning and end of holiday periods: Officially, school holidays in Bavaria start on Monday and end on Friday. For those whose schools recognise Saturday as a school day, it is recommended to check the exact start time of lessons after the holidays in advance.
- Summer holidays in Bavaria are an exception to the rule. They end on a Monday, meaning the first day of school is Tuesday. This is done so that teachers and staff can prepare for the mass return of children to schools and the admission of first-grade pupils.
- Day of Prayer and Repentance: This day has a unique status. Schools remain open and teachers are required to be at their workplaces, but children have no scheduled lessons at all on this day.
- Special educational institutions: Boarding schools and specialised vocational schools have the right to adjust the official ministry holiday schedule.
- Additional days of rest: Private and public home schools can, if necessary, request up to 6 additional holiday days through an authorized representative of the ministry.
Fines for school truancy in Bavaria (Schulpflicht)
In Bavaria, the compulsory school education law (Schulpflicht) is enforced uncompromisingly. Attempting to take a child out of school before the start of official holidays can turn a trip into a legal nightmare. Before the start of school holidays, the police regularly conduct raids in the airport terminals of Munich and Nuremberg.
The fact is that aeroplane tickets become more expensive during school holidays, so some try to save money (especially expats and refugees who do not know the laws!). Police officers stop individuals and entire families with school-age children for checks.
If parents do not have an exemption form (Beurlaubung) in their hands, the police record the offence and forward the case to the public order office (Ordnungsamt). In Bavaria, fines are among the highest: for illegal truancy, a parent, representative or guardian faces a fine ranging from a few hundred to 2,500 euros.
IMPORTANT! If your school uses the centralised form from the ministry of education, you can download it from the official website of the Ministry via this link: https://www.km.bayern.de/download/4-24-01/antrag_beurlaubung_art89_90.pdf.
Public holidays and long weekends (Brückentage)
Pay special attention to public holidays that are not included in the official dates of school holidays.
In Germany, the phenomenon of “bridge days”, called «Brückentage» in German, is common. These are days that connect an official public holiday with the weekend. For example, a bridge day is the Friday between Ascension Day, which is always celebrated on a Thursday, and the following Saturday. Germans often take a day off on such dates to arrange a short holiday for themselves.
