When schoolchildren take a break from school in Thuringia

Children in Thuringia have five holiday periods during the school year. Their dates are determined by the Conference of Education Ministers and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Free State of Thuringia. After coordination and approval, they are published on the official websites of these bodies. School holidays are as follows:

  1. Autumn holidays.
  2. Christmas holidays.
  3. Winter holidays.
  4. Easter holidays.
  5. Summer holidays.

Unlike other German states, Thuringia does not have flexible holidays or additional non-school days. The only bridge day is the Friday after the Ascension of Christ (every year, without exception). On this date, schools are closed to students, teachers and staff.

In addition to school holidays, students have a break from classes on state legal holidays. There are 11 such days during the school year. If a holiday falls on a Sunday or Saturday, it is not postponed – on the following Monday and Friday, schooling takes place as usual. Below are the dates of state holidays and school holidays in Thuringia for each school year.
