When schoolchildren take a break from school in Thuringia

Children in Thuringia have five rest periods during the school year. These dates are determined by both the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports of the Free State of Thuringia and the Conference of Ministers of Education. Once agreed upon and approved, they are published on the official websites of these bodies.

Unlike other German states, Thuringia has no flexible holidays or extra non-school days. The only bridge day is the Friday after Ascension Day (every year, without exception). On this date, schools are closed to students, teachers, and staff. This extra day gives students a four-day long weekend (Thursday through Sunday).

In addition to school holidays, students are given breaks from classes on public holidays. There are 11 such days during the school year. If a holiday falls on a Sunday or Saturday, it is not postponed; classes continue as usual on the following Monday and Friday.
