When children in Saarland take a break from school
Children in the Saarland region, as in other German states, do not attend school during school holidays and legal holidays. They also have flexible holidays (flexible free days), the number of which changes each year. There are six types of school holidays in the Saarland region:
- Autumn holidays.
- Christmas holidays.
- Winter holidays.
- Easter holidays.
- Pentecost holidays (optional).
- Summer holidays.
PLEASE NOTE! In Saarland, all school holidays (except Easter) officially begin on Monday and end on Friday. However, it’s important to note that children do not attend school on Saturdays and Sundays. Consequently, their school holidays are extended by four days – two days off before and two days off after school breaks.
In addition to public holidays, students in Saarland can be excused from classes on religious holidays. This right is usually granted for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. To do this, the student, their parents, guardians, or legal representatives must submit an application to the school.
IMPORTANT! Pentecost holidays have been cancelled for the 2025-2026, 2026-2027, and 2027-2028 school years. However, Pentecost Monday remains a day off. Schools typically use flexible holidays to schedule a few extra days around this holiday. In the 2028-2029 school year, Pentecost school holidays in Saarland will be reinstated.
