#1. Winter school holidays or their equivalent exist only in 13 German states. There is no winter break in the following German states: Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and North Rhine-Westphalia.

#2. In the state of Baden-Württemberg, there is no winter break. Instead, there are rotating carnival holidays. These are not centrally regulated. Check with your school for the carnival schedule.

#3. In four German states, the winter holiday period is called differently:

  1. Bavaria – spring school holidays.
  2. Baden-Württemberg – Carnival holidays.
  3. Bremen – half-year school holidays.
  4. Hamburg – half-year break.

#4. In the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, winter break dates for vocational schools differ from those for regular schools. We publish both options with appropriate notes.

#5. In the state of Schleswig-Holstein, winter break dates are advisory. They may be changed by individual schools or school boards. Please check the exact dates with your school.
