When children in Saarland take a break from school

Children in Saarland, as in other German states, do not attend school during school holidays and legal holidays. In addition, they have flexible holidays (flexible free days). Their number changes every year. In Saarland, there are six types of school holidays:

Autumn holidays.
Christmas holidays.
Winter holidays.
Easter holidays.
Pentecost holidays (optional).
Summer holidays.

IMPORTANT! There is no Pentecost holiday in the 2025-2026, 2026-2027, and 2027-2028 school years. However, Pentecost Monday (Spiritual Monday) remains a legal holiday and a non-school day. Schools are expected to use flexible holidays to accommodate several days of rest for Pentecost.

School holidays in Saarland are not the only time children have a break from classes. Schools are closed on legal holidays. But, unlike other countries in Germany, Saarland does not practice the introduction of mandatory “bridges” (additional days off).
