When schoolchildren take a break from classes in North Rhine-Westphalia
In North Rhine-Westphalia, children have only four school holidays. This is the fewest of all German states. School holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia include autumn, Christmas, Easter, and summer holidays.
Sometimes, an extra day off for Pentecost is included in the school holidays. This is the Tuesday after Pentecost Monday, but in some years it is a school day. Furthermore, there are no fixed “bridge days” in this state. Instead, there are three to four variable days off each school year.
IMPORTANT! Flexible or variable weekends (movable holidays) are determined by the school conference in consultation with the school administration. These dates are set at least eight weeks before the start of summer break. Check with your school for details!
The Ministry of Education of North Rhine-Westphalia strives to ensure that flexible days are uniform across all schools. However, it stipulates that one flexible day off must coincide with a local holiday or significant date (in our opinion, this is somewhat contradictory).
