When children in Schleswig-Holstein take a break from school
In Schleswig-Holstein, there may be four or five vacation periods and one long weekend during the school year. Mandatory vacation periods are: autumn break, Christmas break, Easter break, and summer break.
In addition to the above, children may have winter break. By default, the dates are determined by the Ministry of Education, Training, Science, Research, and Culture, but there is one caveat. Winter break is not mandatory. The decision to cancel or hold it is made by the school administration.
IMPORTANT! Winter break decisions are made for each academic year individually. School administration is required to notify students, their parents, or guardians. Please contact your school for more information.
Besides school holidays, Schleswig-Holstein has one mandatory long weekend during the school year. It begins on Ascension Day (Thursday) and ends on the following Sunday. Friday is officially considered a bridge day.
All schools in Schleswig-Holstein are closed on public holidays. These are days off from school and work for students, teachers, and staff. There are 10 such days during the school year. We have published the dates for each school year.
Special rules for islands
Special rules apply to schools located on the islands of Sylt, Föhr, Amrum, Helgoland, and Halligen. Their summer holidays are one week shorter, and their autumn holidays are one week longer. The remaining holiday periods coincide with the general school holidays for the entire territory of Schleswig-Holstein.
