What you need to know about school holidays in Lower Saxony
The school year schedule in Lower Saxony is set until the end of 2030. By law, it can be amended. However, in practice, this only occurs in emergency situations (wars, epidemics, etc.). The Ministry of Education sets the start dates and all summer school holidays, and the Conference of Education Ministers determines the dates of the summer holidays separately.
As in all German states, children in Lower Saxony are exempt from school on public holidays. Schools are also closed on the day after Ascension Day. This is to allow children four consecutive days off, from Thursday to Sunday.
IMPORTANT! Unlike many other countries, Germany does not reschedule holidays and weekends. If an official holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the school schedule remains unchanged.
In addition, Protestants may attend church services on Epiphany Day, Ash Wednesday, and Maundy Thursday.
