When Hamburg schoolchildren take a break from classes
During the school year, children in Hamburg have five holiday periods. These are four vacation periods and one additional day off from school (half-term break). Schools in Hamburg are closed to students during the following school holidays:
- Autumn holidays.
- Christmas holidays.
- Half a year break.
- Ascension/Pentecost holidays.
- Spring break.
IMPORTANT! Unlike many other German states, Hamburg does not have an Easter holiday. Instead, schoolchildren have an Ascension/Pentecost holiday. Despite the name, it takes place in May and is not tied to Pentecost.
In addition to school holidays, Hamburg schools may have “bridge days”. These are additional non-school days that are not annual. They are set to connect a public holiday with a Saturday or Sunday. For example:
In 2025, Labor Day falls on a Thursday. So Friday is made a bridge day, free of classes. This will give schoolchildren a long weekend. They will rest from school from Thursday to Sunday.
IMPORTANT! The start and end dates of school holidays in this publication are given in the “inclusive” format. That is, if it is indicated that the holiday period begins on Wednesday, then the last school day will be Tuesday.
