When do students in Lower Saxony have a break from school?
Children in Lower Saxony have six rest periods throughout the school year. Please note that the official school holiday for Pentecost is only one day. But together with the weekend and Pentecost Monday, they add up to a long weekend, from Saturday to Tuesday. Here is a general list of school holidays in Lower Saxony:

IMPORTANT! In this publication we provide the school holiday dates in Lower Saxony 2024-2025, 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 in an “inclusive” format. If it is indicated that summer holidays begin on July 2 and end on August 12, this means that the last day of school is July 1, and the first day of school is August 13.
Schools in Lower Saxony are closed for legal (public) holidays. There are 10 such days during the school year in this federal state. Some of them a priori fall on school holidays. But, for the sake of completeness, we indicated them as days off from school.
In addition to school holidays and public holidays, children in Lower Saxony have so-called “bridge days” or “bridges”. Schools are closed on these dates. Their schedule in each year does not coincide with the previous one. Bridge days are introduced to combine Saturday and/or Sunday and the nearest holiday.
For example: Labor Day in 2025 falls on Thursday. Therefore, Friday May 2 has been declared a bridge day. Due to this, children take a break from classes for four days in a row, from Thursday, May 1 to Sunday, May 4.
Exemption from classes on religious holidays
All schools in the federal state of Lower Saxony must, upon request, exempt students from classes on major religious holidays. Exemption from school attendance for events dedicated to religious holidays is also possible. For example: lectures, artistic performances, worship services, etc.
To take advantage of this opportunity, parents or legal guardians must apply in writing. Depending on the school, it must be handed over to the class teacher, tutor, head teacher or the person responsible for communication with students.
