When schoolchildren take a break from school in Thuringia
Children in Thuringia have five rest periods during the school year. These dates are determined by the Conference of Ministers of Culture and Education and the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports of the Free State of Thuringia. Once agreed upon and approved, they are published on the official websites of these bodies.
Unlike other German states, Thuringia has no flexible holidays or additional non-school days. The only bridge day is the Friday after Ascension Day (every year, without exception). On this date, schools are closed to students, teachers, and staff.
In addition to school holidays, students are given breaks from classes on public holidays. There are 11 such days during the school year. If a holiday falls on a Sunday or Saturday, it is not postponed; classes continue as usual on the following Monday and Friday. Below are the dates of public holidays and school breaks in Thuringia for each school year.
IMPORTANT! Thuringia officially does not observe school holidays on Ascension Day. As we noted above, the state authorities make the Friday following the holiday a day off. Therefore, schools are closed from Thursday to Sunday (four consecutive days). For your convenience, we’ve labeled these holidays as “Ascension Day Holidays.”
